Triangle Expressway Completion Project Advances

The final phase of the North Carolina Turnpike Authority’s $2.5 billion Complete 540 Project is now in its second year of construction. When workers finish adding the last 10 miles to the highway — 2028 is the projected date — the Triangle Expressway will be an electronically tolled  loop completely encircling metro Raleigh.

The News & Observer looks at the progress of construction activity. A Flatiron-Fred Smith Company joint venture is building six miles of roadway and a major bridge over the Neuse River. The other four-mile segment is in the hands of a joint venture composed of S.T. Wooten Corporation and Branch Civil. “So far, contractors have focused on clearing trees, moving utilities such as power, sewer and gas lines, and getting started on some of the bridges,” including a 460-foot span over the Bushy Branch stream.

The article notes, “With two sets of contractors building one road, there’s a chance they may not finish at the same time. But so far both teams are on schedule, said Cameron Richards of WSP, the firm overseeing the project for the Turnpike Authority.”
