Two More Municipalities Reinstate Support For I-77 South Express Lanes
Two North Carolina municipalities, Cornelius and Huntersville, have reportedly joined Monroe in reinstating their support for the I-77 South Express Lanes project. “The shift comes as the North Carolina budget mandates municipalities that previously withdrew backing for the project to reimburse the state [for design fees],” WSOC News reports.
No further details on Cornelius and Huntersville’s positions have been reported. TRN notes, that the Monroe City Council voted July 14 to officially back the project’s renewal.

A public awareness and enforcement campaign aimed at preventing commercial vehicle bridge strikes is underway this week across much of the US.
The “Check Your Height, Know It’s Right!” initiative uses social media and video to educate drivers about preventing bridge strikes. In New York State, troopers will also conduct targeted patrols in areas where large commercial vehicles have previously struck bridges.
According to a news release from the New York Governor’s Office, New York State DOT launched the campaign in November 2023. With support from The Eastern Transportation Coalition and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO), 25 other states and the District of Columbia have decided to participate. The campaign’s expansion reflects growing awareness that bridge strikes have serious traffic safety and economic consequences.
NYSDOT is also using this year’s campaign to remind drivers that striking a bridge now results in the driver receiving an eight-point moving violation in New York. All participating states are urging truck operators to use commercial-grade GPS devices and applications because consumer-grade navigation systems and mobile phone mapping applications do not always account for low-clearance bridges and overpasses when calculating routes.
New York’s 511NY website includes a “Trucker Mode” that identifies height- and weight-restricted bridges and highlights routes where commercial vehicles are restricted. Commercial vehicle operators are encouraged to use the feature to verify their routes before traveling.
Georgia DOT and Oklahoma DOT are two of the other agencies participating in this year’s campaign.
