E-470 Authority And Ad Agency Adopt Creative Approach To Promoting The Tollway's Virtues

Colorado’s E-470 Public Highway Authority and Boulder-based advertising agency Standard Practice have formed a partnership to position the tollway as a valuable community asset operated by people who care about enhancing driving safety and pleasure.

The product of their most recent collaboration is a campaign that includes a video commercial, “Drives Like a A Dream.” It uses the vivid images and narration of car advertising to “shift perception of the toll road, which is often viewed sceptically by local drivers despite its higher level of maintenance and smoother driving experience.” According to one Standard Practice partner, “Instead of asking people to engage with something they already decided how to feel about, we entertain them. Earn their curiosity and attention, and start to get them to learn more about us.” A colleague noted that filming the commercial was easy because “the road itself looks amazing. There truly weren’t potholes to avoid, or trash to dodge. We could shoot anywhere along the 47-mile stretch.”

An outgrowth of the campaign is the E-470 display at this week’s Colorado Auto Show that consists of a full-scale slice of the tollway. Sitting amidst new car models, the display is a natural extension of print and video advertising that “presents the E470 as something engineered, refined, and designed for performance,” rather than “a drab piece of civic infrastructure.”

The $1.2 billion final phase of the North Carolina Turnpike Authority’s Complete 540 project is now making visible progress. Crews working for months on brush clearing and earth moving have advanced to pipe installation and are making preparations for the installation of bridge girders.

Officials expect to open the new segment, which will complete the Triangle Expressway outer loop around Raleigh. by 2028. Planned development along the corridor, such as the proposed children’s hospital campus in Apex, is already creating demand for the increased NC 540 capacity the project will deliver.
