PA Turnpike Reports On Roadside Pollinator Habitat Program's Continued Success

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) has completed the annual report on its award-winning Pollinator Habitat Initiative, one facet of its strategic commitment to enhancing the sustainability of its assets and operations.

Since 2022, the initiative has established habitats at seven facilities (including two service plazas) to create environments that support bees, butterflies, and other pollinating insects. In addition to its obvious ecological benefits, the program helps PTC decrease greenhouse gas emissions and fuel costs by reducing mowing operations. Signs posted at the sites educate the public about the importance of pollinators and the role their habitats play in supporting broader ecosystems.

Among other things, the new report documents:

  • annual growth in the number of hosted species;
  • rising pollinator counts in the seven habitats;
  • evidence that new seed mixes are strongly established, which increases the likelihood sites will be self-sustaining; and
  • increased wildlife and environmental benefits and improvements in long-term maintenance costs in areas with low seed mix success compared to previous turf environments.

NTSB's Office of Highway Safety Now Led By Aviation Safety Expert

On April 28, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced two executive staff changes.

Dave Helson was promoted to director of the Office of Highway Safety, the unit that investigates roadway crashes that have significant safety implications nationwide, highlight national safety issues, or generate high interest because of emerging technologies. Mr. Helson, who joined NTSB in 2008, previously held leadership roles in board units concerned with air and space safety. He has a background in commercial aviation.

Akbar Sultan joined NTSB as director of the Office of Research and Engineering, which provides scientific and technical expertise for NTSB accident investigations across all modes of transportation. Mr. Sultan was a NASA employee for 26 years, focusing on aviation safety and the development and implementation of advanced air traffic control technologies. Most recently, he was director of NASA’s Airspace Operations and Safety Program.
