I-77 Corridor Community Hopes To Gain From Express Lanes Project's Cancellation

Chris Carney, the mayor of Mooresville, a community north of Charlotte, is critical of the Charlotte Regional Transportation Planning Organization vote that led to the demise of the I-77 South Express Lanes P3 project. He called the organization’s decision to rescind support for the North Carolina DOT plan “shortsighted” and a setback for the entire region. Mooresville’s CRTPO board representative wanted to to table the rescission motion pending further study but failed to gain support for his position.

Following the CRTPO vote, NCDOT withdrew its commitment of $600 million to the express lanes project. Carney wants the department to reallocate as much as $40 million of the money to an I-77 interchange project in his town. “If Charlotte decided that they’re OK moving on, then I hope the state will be able to see that those of us who have supported their transportation improvements and what the state’s plan has been, that hopefully we get rewarded with keeping some of that money in the region,” Carney stated.

It’s been an honor and an absolute pleasure working for this amazing industry and organization,” she wrote in a farewell LinkedIn post.

In 2025, she stepped into the role of interim executive director for several months, filling the interval between Kathryn Clay’s departure and Mark Chung’s assumption of the IBTTA executive post.

Florida Toll Collector Killed In Tollbooth Crash

A Volusia County, Florida, toll collector was killed yesterday afternoon when a pickup tuck slammed into her booth. The vehicle toppled and crushed the tollbooth structure, probably causing the 63-year-old victim’s immediate death. The incident occurred at a Daytona Beach Shores location where the county collects parking fees and beach driving tolls. After the collision, the truck continued onto the beach and into the surf. Bystanders helped the 35-year-old driver exit the cab.

An investigation remains underway but initial police reports indicate that speed and driver intoxication were factors in the crash. The driver is in temporary detention.

HERE And Toll Collect Incorporate Truck Parking Data Into Navigation App

HERE Technologies, the European mapping and location-data company controlled by a consortium of major automakers, has integrated data from Toll Collect’s parking information service (SID) into the HERE WeGo Pro navigation application.

According to a HERE news release, “SID provides continuously updated data on the utilization of truck parking facilities based on anonymized toll system data, bringing trusted and standardized parking information into HERE’s driver-centric truck navigation experience.” For truckers traveling Germany’s motorway network, the innovation provides near real-time parking availability information, helping drivers plan mandatory work breaks and avoid unnecessary detours.

HERE notes that in Europe, as in the US, “[f]inding available parking remains one of the biggest daily challenges for truck drivers, particularly when approaching mandatory rest periods.”
