Kansas' First Tolled Express Lanes Will Open Next Month

69Express, soon to be the first tolled express lane facility in Kansas, is expected to open sometime during the second half of next month according to a KDOT project manager. Following three years of work and traffic disruption in a busy Overland Park US 69 corridor, major construction is complete and the focus is on testing toll system equipment. “We’re undergoing some of the final checks [of the technology], just to verify its reliability and that the data transfers to [the Kansas Turnpike Authority] as it is expected to,” the manager said. The turnpike authority (KTA) is KDOT’s tolling partner in the highway widening project. It will operate and maintain the dynamic pricing system and provide customer service through DriveKS platform.

KDOT notes that a few landscaping and clean-up jobs will be deferred until the arrival of spring weather. Also, some post-opening lane closures may be required for paving maintenance, but KDOT will schedule the work during non-peak hours.

KDOT plans to hold a final US 69 Corridor Modernization and Expansion Project meeting with the public on the evening of February 11 in Overland Park. The event will give motorists opportunities to open a KTAG transponder account and ask questions about the operation of the toll lanes.
