Ohio Turnpike 2026 Capital Budget Totals Nearly $247 Million

At its December meeting, the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission (OTIC) approved a $246.8 million capital budget for 2026. With tolls providing nearly 98 percent of the required funding, the budget will support a range of projects, including ongoing pavement replacement, bridge rehabilitation, toll system upgrades, and service plaza improvements. Commissioners allocated $230.5 million for a preliminary list of capital projects and set aside $16.3 million in uncommitted reserve funds.

Important budgeted projects include:

  • replacement and resurfacing of more than 114 lane miles of pavement,
  • completion of two full bridge replacements and installation of new decks on 12 bridges, and
  • launch of ITS and advanced traffic management system installations scheduled for completion in 2027, including dynamic message signs, variable speed limit signs, video monitoring equipment, and a roadway weather information system.

OTIC Executive Director Ferzan Ahmed, PE, Commented that the spending plan “reflects our responsibility to the millions of travelers and commercial drivers who rely on the Ohio Turnpike every year. It’s a forward-looking investment in safety, mobility, and economic growth across Ohio.”

Malaysia Pilot Project Billed As Step Toward MLFF Tolling

PLUS Malaysia Berhad, the Southeast Asian nation’s leading toll road concession operator, is conducting a pilot of what it calls an “open payment” electronic collection system as a initial step toward development of multi-lane free flow tolling. The initiative involves nine toll plazas along the North-South Expressway where the company installed automated number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras supported by artificial intelligence technology.

Drivers who wish to participate in the pilot must download a mobile app (JustGO Malaysia) to register their vehicles and link to a payment method. After that, they can enter or exit through any of the lanes in the nine plazas without stopping. A payment platform processes toll payments based on license plate image capture. The pilot is open exclusively to passenger vehicles.

Since PLUS currently has no barrier-free lanes, participating motorists must still slow down as they pass through the nine plazas. Because it is mobile-based, the pilot system does not require use any type of on-board device. PLUS is continuing to support existing payment methods, including Touch ‘n Go card, SmartTAG and MyRFID, during the pilot.

PLUS has been conducting ANPR testing for several years in conjunction with Malaysia’s highway agency. The effort advances goals of reducing plaza congestion and eliminating unsafe merging where lanes are reserved for particular payment methods. The company claims the pilot is a step toward creating a payment platform that the entire toll road industry will own.
