Trump's Influence Over Energy Market Conditions Diminishes
According to POLITICO, although President Trump was previously able to influence gasoline pricing by predicting breakthroughs in peace negotiations with Iran, his credibility with market participants is waning. As a result, actual conditions — such as tightening global supplies, refining capacity, and depleted US petroleum reserves — are now more likely to determine how the market will affect consumers and businesses.
POLITICO’s analysis also notes:
- The president is publicly pressuring oil companies to reduce consumer prices, claiming suppliers are profiting from the current supply shortage.
- Crude oil supplies are diminishing due to the war’s effect on shipments, causing refiners to warn that prices will remain high even after restrictions are lifted.
- The nation’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve is now at its lowest level since 1983 because of the releases recently authorized by Trump.
- Replenishing the flow of crude oil depends on reopening the Strait of Hormuz, something Trump says he faces no deadline to accomplish.
- Retail gas prices are expected to decline as the summer driving season ends. However, current average pricing has already “set a new record for the latest in the calendar year that prices are so high.”
Detroit Advances Study Of Three I-75 Caps
“A proposed plan to build three park-like caps over Interstate 75 in downtown Detroit has reached a major milestone, with officials announcing the completion of a feasibility study that moves the project into its next phase,” MLive.com reports. The study now advances to a National Environmental Policy Act review. Meanwhile, officials will identify potential funding sources for the estimated $300 million project. They will also discuss operational responsibilities and how it could be split into phases.
The study envisions three caps over I-75 to reconnect neighborhoods that were separated by its construction decades ago. Each cap would have a specific purpose and design: 1) facilitating recreation, education, and community events; 2) accommodating larger events and everyday use; or 3) “emphasiz[ing] reflection and Detroit’s Black cultural legacy through gardens, walking paths, storytelling spaces, public art and playscapes.”
The plan is the result of a collaboration among the Downtown Detroit Partnership, the city of Detroit,and Michigan DOT. It was funded by a $2 million grant from USDOT’s Neighborhood Access and Equity Planning program.
Eric B. Larson, CEO of the Downtown Detroit Partnership, said in a statement, “Through nearly a year of community engagement, past and present residents and businesses have helped inform a vision that honors Detroit’s history while creating new opportunities for recreation, culture, economic growth and community connection.”

On August 3, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that it will make $20 million in awards available through its Innovative Traffic Safety Enforcement (ITSE) program. Eligibility is unrestricted, meaning a wide range of public and private entities may apply.
ITSE grants support the development, testing, and validation of enforcement innovations that target dangerous driving behaviors, such as drug- and alcohol-impaired driving, distracted driving, driving without seatbelts, speeding, and reckless driving. Grant funds can be used for:
- State-of-the-art safety technology to curb dangerous driving behaviors
- Predictive data-driven analytics to deploy law enforcement resources
- Public-private partnerships to incentivize positive driving behavior
- Specialized training on addressing dangerous driving behaviors for law enforcement personnel
NHTSA encourages applicants to incorporate evidence-based strategies, such as high-visibility enforcement and publicized checkpoints, into these initiatives.
