Transurban Considers Introducing Dynamic Toll Pricing In Australia
While some Australian facilities, such as Transurban’s West Gate Tunnel in Melbourne, “already charge higher fees during set peak morning travel times, dynamic pricing would see prices shift at any time during the day based on demand,” Drive reports.
Anup Jois, Transurban’s general manager for Victoria, said the uniquely North American pricing model may have merit in the Australian market, which accounts for 90 percent of the company’s revenue. Transurban operates nearly all the continent’s toll facilities.
“And we look forward to having constructive conversations if governments have interest in that sort of pricing model,” Jois said.
WhichCar also reports on the possible tolling shift, calling it a “dreaded” phenomenon and predicting it may boost Transurban’s profits. “The company has also been accused of trying to stand in the way of the [New South Wales] state government’s attempts to reduce costs for drivers, which resulted in one-off price cuts on a handful of roads in Sydney.”

Repaving was completed three hours early on the westbound deck of the Bay Area’s Alfred Zampa Memorial Bridge over the Carquinez Strait, Vallejo Times-Herald reports. The bridge was closed to westbound traffic for 50 hours, from Friday night at 10:00 PM until midnight Monday morning, August 24. Eastbound traffic was not affected.
In addition to repaving, Caltrans crews performed other maintenance, such as vegetation control and litter and graffiti cleanup on the critical I-80 link. Temporary striping will be made permanent in the coming days.
Caltrans spokesperson Bart Ney said the closure caused a half-hour delay on I-80 and an hour-long delay on I-780. “But it was really special to repave this bridge. It’s the only bridge named after a blue-collar worker, and the last repaving was done 23 years ago. So we’re hoping to get another 20 years at least out of this repaving.’”
Alfred Zampa was a union iron worker and one of the first members of the Halfway to Hell Club, an exclusive club organized by men who fell from the Golden Gate Bridge during its construction and were saved by safety nets. Zampa also was the subject of Isabelle Maynard’s play “The Ace.”

USDOT’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) released its third-quarter 2026 Transportation Economic Trends (TET) yesterday, August 24. “TET highlights transportation’s role in the economy and explores changes (trends) over time through a series of interactive charts and downloadable data. TET also explains related concepts and data sources for a general audience.”

Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission Inaugurates Sustainability Impact Award
The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) has honored Keith Jack, assistant chief of facilities operations, as the inaugural recipient of its new Sustainability Impact Award. PTC established the award to recognize employees who demonstrate leadership in the agency’s goal of becoming “America’s First Sustainable Superhighway” by 2040.
In a news release, CEO Mark Compton said, “Keith has embraced the pioneering spirit of those who planned and built our roadway by helping to create an organization-wide culture that ensures environmental sustainability practices are embodied in every decision of our roadway and business practices.”
Jack oversees 140 facilities across the state’s 565-mile turnpike system, including several buildings and offices, an industrial park, five tunnels, tower sites, toll collection facilities, and state police stations. An inductive charging showcase for electric vehicles and several solar installations have been installed under his purview. The Navy veteran also speaks about sustainability at industry conferences.
“Throughout my career, I’ve believed that investing in sustainable infrastructure is about leaving our facilities and transportation system stronger for the next generation,” Jack said.
