Advocacy Group Puts Alternative Visions Of Charlotte I-77 Project On Display
Sustain Charlotte, a non-profit advocacy group in the forefront of opposition to North Carolina DOT’s I-77 South Express Lanes P3 project, put more than 30 alternative design proposals on display last night, April 13. The event was the culmination of an open design challenge, “Reimagining 77 South: A Vision for Repairing and Reconnecting Charlotte,” that the organization launched last month. It received submissions from professional designers and students, as well as a 10-year-old girl who aspires to be a city planner.
Not surprisingly, designs focused on leveraging transit, preserving green space, reconnecting separated neighborhoods, and incorporating amenities such as public art displays and playing fields. Sustain Charlotte leader Shannon Binns said the challenge was created “[b]ecause unfortunately, the types of designs and ideas that we’re seeing tonight have not really been discussed among elected officials and among state DOT.” He added that the submissions will be sent to Charlotte city officials and NCDOT.

USDOT held a first National Traffic Incident Management Responder Training Day at its headquarters last week. The event, which drew 100 people from law enforcement, first responder, and state and local transportation agencies, spotlighted the department’s traffic incident management (TIM) training program led by FHWA. The agency’s four-hour course of instruction is available at no cost in a variety of delivery formats.
TIM is a standardized set of best practices for responding to and clearing traffic incidents that are designed to guide police, firefighters, highway workers, paramedics, and tow truck drivers. It promotes the principle that “[e]fficient incident response requires seamless collaboration and coordination among responders to meet the needs of those injured, ensure the safety of responders and road users, quickly clear the incident, and prevent secondary crashes.”
Coinciding with the USDOT event, several state agencies, including the South Carolina, Nebraska, and Texas DOTs, hosted their own TIM training sessions.

Maine lawmakers have passed a bill (LD 669) that extends state death benefits to Maine DOT workers killed on the job. The legislation easily passed both legislative chambers and was approved for funding before heading to the governor’s desk for final approval.
If it’s signed into law, the measure will provide the family of a DOT employee killed while working on a highway, bridge, or other transportation facility with a payment of approximately $118,000, the same amount provided to survivors of police officers, firefighters, and corrections officers.
The bill was offered following the January crash death of two DOT employees who were related. In legislative testimony, the son of one of the men said he has assumed responsibility for his father’s financial obligations but only received a modest payment from the state to help with funeral expenses. The families of both men will receive death benefits if the law takes effect.
