TransCore Wins IBTTA Recognition For Innovative Congestion Zone Toll System

Sharing this week’s wave of good news about the MTA congestion pricing program is TransCore, recipient of IBTTA’s Toll Excellence Award for innovation for its pioneering development of the congestion zone pricing system. Nashville-headquartered TransCore designed, manufactured, and deployed on schedule a tolling solution that processes a huge volume of raw data to create a transaction for each of the hundreds of thousands of vehicles that enter Manhattan’s business district daily. The company now operates and maintains the system for MTA.

TransCore says the all-overhead system is unique in that it “uses machine vision cameras, convolutional neural networks, and advanced machine learning to identify, classify, and form toll transactions for vehicles in real time. Unlike traditional tolling systems that form complete transactions at the roadside, TransCore’s solution shifts the formation and processing logic to a centralized host environment, marking the first tolling solution in the United States to utilize machine learning technology.” The innovative configuration “enables a significantly lighter roadside infrastructure footprint to process transactions in a highly automated, real-time manner at scale while maintaining exceptional system performance and accuracy.”

TransCore’s Infinity® Digital Lane System, which was designed with New York’s complex environment in mind, powers the system. “[E]nhanced with embedded AI and machine learning to automate vehicle classification, streamline image processing, and reduce the need for roadside hardware,” Infinity processes raw visual data into “accurate, real-time transactions — delivering the performance, scalability, and design flexibility required to manage one of the busiest traffic districts in the world. The system is designed to be future-ready, supporting dynamic pricing models by time-of-day, dwell time, or vehicle miles traveled, as well as discounts and exemptions. It also integrates with third-party multimodal providers, such as taxis and rideshare services, ensuring flexibility as mobility patterns evolve.”

IBTTA’s award citation recognizes the groundbreaking character of the TransCore system. “With features like variable pricing algorithms, AI-based video classification, and APIs for multimodal third-party integration, TransCore’s solution sets a global benchmark for congestion pricing innovation,” the association says.

Trucking Association Backs New Zealand Transport Agency Toll Proposals

Transporting New Zealand, a trade association representing freight haulers, is backing the national transportation agency’s proposal to toll a proposed new 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) highway, the Belfast to Pegasus (B2P) motorway extension and Woodend bypass in the Canterbury region. The group maintains that toll collection is the key to getting new highways designated “Roads of National Significance” built.

“Between this route and two other recently proposed toll roads which we supported – Otaki to North of Levin and the Takitimu North Link in Bay of Plenty – some $1.5 billion [USD 896 million] in toll revenue is estimated to be collected over 35 years. That’s money that doesn’t come from the National Land Transport Fund, and which can instead be allocated to maintaining or improving existing roads,” said the trucking organization’s chief executive. “Nobody enjoys stumping up for road tolls, particularly when they’re already paying fuel tax or weight-calculated Road User Charges. However, modern, grade separated roads keep motorists safer, move people and freight faster, and reduce congestion and inefficient stop-start driving.”
