Ohio Pilot Uses Ramp-Mounted Cameras To Address Wrong-Way Driving
As part of a pilot, Ohio DOT is installing more than 30 cameras along central Ohio highways to detect wrong-way drivers. The equipment, placed on both state highway and interstate highway exit ramps, will enable the department’s traffic center to dispatch police quickly to deal with a wrong-way driver.
An ODOT spokesman said the initiative’s purpose is to save valuable time, given that a member of the public who spots a wrong-way driver can have difficulty providing vital information to a 911 operator. “The longer we’re on the phone trying to explain where we are and trying to get that information to the right jurisdiction, the distance between us and that wrong-way driver continues to increase,” he said.
Cameras in use in Cincinnati and Cleveland indicate that most incidents are accidental and quickly result in motorists turning around while still on a ramp. Although there were 80 wrong-way crashes in Ohio last year, the majority involving intoxication, the number of incidents has been declining each year since 2022. The ODOT spokesperson said wrong-way crashes are a small percentage of the state’s annual total but are 40 times more likely to involve a fatality.
