PennDOT Begins Evaluation Of Wrong-Way Driving Detection Technology

PennDOT is now testing a $4.8 million wrong-way driving detection system installed on ramps along a State Route 28 corridor in metro Pittsburgh. Activation of the system is expected to follow soon.

The system uses sensors and thermal cameras to detect vehicles entering the highway in the wrong direction. Roadway signs and lights are automatically activated to alert erring drivers, and a notification is sent to PennDOT’s Western Regional Traffic Management Center. A possible future upgrade would warn other motorists of an approaching wrong-way vehicle.

The system’s components, all located within department right-of-way, include controller boxes, fiber optics, and other electrical devices, in addition to the cameras, signs, and lighting. Power Contracting Company, a local union outfit, installed the equipment at more than a dozen ramps.

The Pittsburgh project is the first large-scale implementation of the technology anywhere in the state. PennDOT will conduct an evaluation before deciding where else to install it.
