The Pennsylvania Turnpike "Awed And Inspired" An Earlier Generation

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette publishes an op-ed by a retired family physician that can only be described as a paean to the Pennsylvania Turnpike, which will reach its eightieth anniversary on October 1. Neal Schorr shares memories of turnpike journeys in the 1960s, and observes, “[I]f few people today have recollections such as mine, consider that there are even fewer left alive who traveled the turnpike in its early years of operation. For those who did, they laid eyes on a monumental achievement, the likes of which they had never seen.” In the midst of  current national distress, Schorr comments, it’s worth remembering that the turnpike “was not merely a means of traversing the mountains. It was a monumental achievement, a source of inspiration and a sign of better times to come for those who had endured an era of unprecedented hardships.”

Mexican National Guard Removes Protesters From Tollbooths

Associated Press reports, national guard troops “moved in” yesterday and removed protesters who were occupying tollbooths and illegally collecting tolls at nine interchanges in the state of Nayarit. The protests, some of questionable legitimacy, reportedly caused the government and concessionaires “tens of millions of dollars in lost revenues over nearly 250 days.” The military reported that no injuries occurred.
