Childcare Grants Help Boost Female Participation In Construction Workforce
Cal Matters reports, women comprise only about 11 percent of the trades workforce nationally, “underrepresented for reasons such as misperceptions of the industry, family pressures, and treatment in the workplace.” But for a population increasingly serving as family breadwinners, the trades offer a promising career path. California’s Department of Industrial Relations has developed recruitment, training and childcare assistance programs to boost women’s representation in the construction industry. Additionally, grants provided through the agency’s Equal Representation in Construction Apprenticeship (ERiCA) program are addressing what research has shown to be the biggest barrier to both recruitment and retention, finding childcare.

General Motors will begin selling adapters to allow its electric vehicles (EVs) to access Tesla EV chargers, The New York Times reports. Ford and Rivian gained access to the extensive charging network last year, and agreements with other automakers — including Hyundai, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz — are still in the works. “The delays in gaining access to Tesla’s chargers have raised questions about whether other automakers erred by agreeing to switch to the company’s network, making them dependent on [Tesla CEO Elon Musk], who is known for impulsive decision making. . . . G.M. said [last week] that it would buy adapters from several suppliers, rather than relying solely on Tesla.” The company plans to sell the devices for $225 apiece, while Ford and Rivian are giving theirs away to vehicle owners.
