Vancouver Bridge Users No Longer Pay a Toll, but at What Cost?

CBC News reports, when the government of British Columbia stopped tolling Vancouver’s Port Mann Bridge in September 2017, average daily crossings increased by 23 percent, which means, ironically, there was a new cost to drivers: “Unsurprisingly, drivers who were accustomed to forking out the fee and cruising across the Fraser [River] suddenly found their daily commute a lot less expensive [sic] but a lot more time consuming as additional volume snarled traffic, especially during rush hour.” According to the article, the BC transport minister still maintains that removing the toll was the correct move, stating, “Our government does not believe that people should be paying tolls to fund infrastructure.”
