Transportation and Climate Initiative Withdrawals Leave Vermont In The Lurch

VTDigger.org reports, Massachusetts and Connecticut have pulled out of the Transportation and Climate Initiative Program (TCI-P), “halting any immediate prospect that Vermont could participate in the program” and creating a sudden gap in a climate action plan that a state agency is due to deliver by tomorrow, December 1. The TCI-P, a cap-and-trade program, aims to reduce vehicle emissions while raising funds for state investment in green transportation. Vermont environmental groups criticized the withdrawal decisions and took issue with the reasoning that surging fuel prices rendered TCI-P impractical.

Wilson links transportation equity with workforce diversity, and he hopes “to help AASHTO and the broader transportation industry do a better job of promoting diversity” within the ranks of agencies and vendors. “He’d also like to see the industry connecting with more groups affected by its work, including low-income communities and advocates for different modes of transportation.”
