Will The Brent Spence Closure Refocus Attention On US Infrastructure's Plight?

FreightWaves reports on the truck collision that caused the Brent Spence Bridge closure and the possibility that the resulting bottleneck could focus attention on the need to rehabilitate or replace the span, a multibillion-dollar undertaking. The article notes that the bridge is part of “one of the busiest trucking routes in the U.S.” and its prolonged closure could cost millions in freight-delays. “According to a 2009 study from the Texas Transportation Institute, the bridge carries 3% of the nation’s GDP each year, equating to $417 billion.”

NY Thruway Publishes Toll History Page To Honor Collection Staff

The new History of Toll Collection on the New York Thruway web page, published to coincide with the advent of systemwide, all-electronic tolling, marks the end of an era during which toll collectors and processors were “the backbone of the organization.” It reminds us that “[w]hile cash collection technology inside the toll booths changed over the years,” toll collectors consistently did more than accept payments and make change. Working at all hours of the day and in all weather conditions, they greeted and helped motorists in ways that humanized travel over a concrete, steel and mechanical “superhighway.”
