University Study Will Help Charlotte Shape New Transportation Plan
The Charlotte City Council has budgeted $300,000 to partner with the University of North Carolina-Charlotte on a reassessment of its transportation model. The collaboration is a first step toward deciding what new policies and plans the city should adopt following North Carolina DOT’s decision to cancel the controversial I-77 South Express Lanes project.
Councilmember Victoria Watlington (D-At Large), the proponent of the funding allocation, said university researchers will start by conducting a literature review to determine the latest global trends in transportation and urban planning. They will then assess the city’s existing planning model and suggest changes. The university stated its role “is scientific and evaluative and to provide an independent technical evaluation of the modeling and data ecosystems the city currently uses. Recommendations on which projects to fund, which corridors to prioritize, or which policies to adopt remain with the City of Charlotte.”

The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) recently completed the deployment of a Wrong-Way Driving Vehicle Detection Countermeasures System at 12 key locations across the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway. The system relies on an integrated technology network to provide “immediate, unmistakable warnings” to motorists who try to travel onto the expressway in the wrong direction. Components include rectangular flashing beacons positioned at exits and in-pavement warning lighting installed at all ramps. THEA supported fast and reliable communication across the entire system by making fiber optic infrastructure upgrades. It also installed ITS enhancements, including new ethernet switches and uninterruptible power supply equipment, to ensure the operational efficiency of the countermeasures.
