Richmond, VA, Expressway Authority Advises Customers To Prepare For AET Conversion

In a Friday, January 30, news release, the Richmond (Virginia) Metropolitan Transportation Authority (RMTA) confirmed that it will transition to all-electronic tolling sometime early this year.

Construction of the gantries that will support new collection technology started last summer and is continuing. “[O]nce AET is fully implemented, drivers will no longer be able to pay with cash, including coins, on the Powhite Parkway, Boulevard Bridge and all ramps,” RMTA stated. “At the Downtown Expressway, cash will only be accepted from 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Outside of those hours, tolls will be collected using E-ZPass, and if a driver does not have an E-ZPass, Pay-By-Plate will apply.”

Fahad Khan, the authority’s director of operations, commented, “Moving to all-electronic tolling is an important step toward a safer, more efficient expressway system for the Richmond Region. We encourage all customers to take action now [in preparation for the AET conversion].” RMTA customer outreach ahead of the transition will include additional reminders, signage, and public information campaigns.
