Massachusetts Turnpike Bridge Replacement Will Disrupt Traffic Over Two Upcoming Weekends
NBC News Boston reports, “There will be ‘intense congestion’ on the Massachusetts Turnpike near Interstate 95 in the Newton/Weston area for two upcoming weekends, transportation officials announced [yesterday], urging the public to plan other ways to get around.”
MassDOT warned that construction-related backups of two-to-three hours can be anticipated between Friday night, May 30, and early Monday, June 2, and again between June 20 and June 23 over the same time period. The affected highway segment’s weekend volume is typically about 80,000 vehicles, including many trucks.
Crews will be replacing a highway bridge that crosses over a major rail line. “The work involves demolishing the existing bridge, then bringing in pre-fabricated bridge units and installing them [before the start of weekday peak traffic]. A dry run at the site went well last weekend.” The bridge replacement is part of MassDOT’s multiyear I-495 and I-90 Interchange Improvements project on the turnpike.

KRON reports, on Wednesday, a motorist suspected of driving under the influence led police on a slow-speed chase that ended when he reached the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge toll plaza, “where he stopped in the middle of the merge, optimizing the havoc he could wreak on the morning commute.” The driver, who claimed he is a “sovereign citizen” not subject to police authority, at first refused to get out of the car. Police officers eventually induced him to exit by introducing a “chemical agent” into the vehicle. In addition to facing new charges, the driver was arrested on an outstanding warrant related to a previous police pursuit.
