Plant Tour Gives Reporters Insight Into Huge Hampton Roads Tunnel Project

WTVR reports, the media got a behind-the scenes look at precast concrete fabrication work that is a critical part of the huge Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel Expansion Project. Project director James Utterback and Technopref Industries last week showed reporters how the fifteen-foot-long segments that combine to  form tunnel rings are molded and readied for barge transport to the construction site. It takes nine segments to form a single ring, meaning more than 21,000 segments will be needed to complete the $3.8 billion project’s twin tunnels. Utterback said the tour of the casting operation facility was organized to draw attention to the progress of construction.
