Texas Highway Fund Will Reap Millions From New EV Registration Fees

The Dallas Morning News reports, on May 13, Texas Governor Greg Abbott (R) quietly signed into law a bill that imposes an additional fee of $400 for registering a new electric vehicle (EV), and requires EV owners to pay a $200 annual registration fee. Advocates said the bill (SB 505) will ensure that drivers who don’t pay petroleum fuel taxes bear a “fair share” of highway costs. The new fees are expected to increase state highway fund revenue by at least $38 million in 2024, the first full year of implementation. According to a local source cited by the newspaper, Texas currently has almost 200,000 registered EVs after gaining an additional 30,000 so far this year.
