Infrastructure Framework Negotiations Bog Down

The New York Times reports, “Nearly five weeks after President Biden and a group of Republican and Democratic senators triumphantly announced that they had risen above the polarization gripping Washington to agree on a framework for an infrastructure deal, there was trouble in bipartisan paradise [yesterday] as their agreement appeared to teeter on the brink of collapse.” According to the article, “private policy disagreements turned into public finger-pointing between the two parties,” senators open to compromise are tiring of negotiation, and the immediate past president issued an unsolicited comment aimed at upending any deal. The Times also notes, “The contents of the agreement have remained shrouded in mystery to all but the negotiators as details shift. The framework the White House released last month is now out of date, according to people familiar with it, as a key financing provision has been gutted and replaced.”

The Washington Post and The Hill also report on the delicate state of negotiations.

Report: Infrastructure Framework Would Produce Significant Job Growth

The Hill reports, “Bipartisan infrastructure legislation would create nearly half a million manufacturing jobs before the end of President Biden’s first term, according to a new analysis released [today]. The report, authored by research firm IHS Markit on behalf of the [AEM, trade group representing heavy equipment manufacturers like Caterpillar], includes jobs created by the $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure proposal and the Senate’s $304 billion surface transportation reauthorization bill.” AEM is reportedly one of the several business groups “prodding lawmakers to swiftly pass the bipartisan infrastructure framework, which forgoes tax hikes on corporations.”

An AEM (Association of Equipment Manufacturers) news release has more information about the analysis of the infrastructure deal’s potential to create new high-quality manufacturing jobs.

An Update On Kansas Turnpike Bridge-Raising Efforts

KVOE post an update on the latest round of Kansas Turnpike Authority bridge-raising projects. The article notes, “[B]ridges are disconnected from their support structures as part of the process. Hydraulic pistons serve as temporary supports before the bridges are raised, perhaps as high as 17 inches as bridges are lifted to at least a minimum standard of 15 feet, 9 inches. Roads going above the highway are closed during this process.” A KTA spokesperson tells KVOE another multiyear phase of bridge raisings could get underway “within the next few years.”
