Carlos Monje Confirmed As USDOT Planning Chief

Transport Topics reports, the US Senate recently confirmed Carlos Monje as USDOT under secretary of transportation for policy, the department’s third most senior management position. The vote was unanimous. Monje has previously served in USDOT as an acting under secretary and assistant secretary for transportation policy, responsible for the implementation of surface transportation affairs, discretionary grants and economic development guidance.

New York Cracks Down On Highway Work Zone Violations

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that New York state and local police “are writing tickets in record numbers to crack down on motorists who flagrantly disobey vehicle and traffic laws in highway work zones as part of Operation Hardhat.” Over 900 citations have been issued so far this year. In 2020, the number of violations exceeded the 2019 total by 70 percent. Cuomo also announced that a permanent memorial honoring highway workers, particularly those who have died on the job, is under construction at the state fair site.
