Illinois Tollway Earns “StormReady” Designation From National Weather Service

The Illinois Tollway Authority announced yesterday that the US National Weather Service (NWS) has recognized it as “StormReady” for “being well-prepared to respond quickly and effectively to dangerous weather conditions on any of the five roadways that make up the 294-mile Tollway system in Northern Illinois.” The NWS designation means the authority “is prepared to manage extreme weather events through advanced planning, effective communication and situational awareness.” Authority officials cited a number of programs, procedures and systems that enabled it to receive the designation, currently shared by just two other US toll agencies.

NWS provides an online overview of the StormReady program and application process.

PennDOT Challenges Students To Solve Difficult Tuck Parking Problem

Transport Topics reports, the topic of this year’s PennDOT Innovations Challenge — a competition that tests the problem-solving skills of high school students and cultivates interest in transportation careers — is truck parking. Students were invited “to choose one of 12 geographic areas where truck parking is a problem, and develop an innovative approach to increase parking availability while also offsetting potential construction costs.” Department spokesperson Alexis Campbell says, “Truck parking has been an ongoing challenge for many states, including Pennsylvania. We’ve studied the issue and are working on some options to help address it in our Freight Movement Plan, but we’re looking for creative ideas from the next generation.” Despite the complexity of this year’s topic, PennDOT had received 11 entries by last week. The submission deadline is tonight.
