India's First Barrier-Free Toll Plaza Goes Into Operation
India’s Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari announced that the country’s first multi-lane free flow toll collection system became operational today, May 1. The system was launched after testing that began on February 2 at the Choryasi toll plaza on the Mumbai-Delhi National Highway (NH 48) near Surat.
Gantry-mounted high-resolution cameras combined with AI-supported license plate recognition software leverage India’s FASTag technology and permit motorists to pass through the toll point at highway speed. Drivers without a functional transponder account will receive an electronic payment notice that is recorded in the national vehicle registry e-services system. Unpaid tolls trigger automatic penalties and can lead to additional sanctions, such as registration suspension.
Mr. Gadkari called today’s development a major milestone in the digitization of India’s tolling ecosystem and the modernization of national highway infrastructure. The government set a goal to install barrier free collection systems at more than 1,050 toll plazas nationwide by the end of this year. However, Gadkari said last week the process will take longer than initially anticipated.

Indra Group USA announced it will showcase advanced tolling and smart mobility solutions at the 2026 IBTTA Technology Summit that starts tomorrow in Orlando.
Company representatives will focus on advances in open-road tolling solutions that “pave the way for gantryless infrastructure. Indra’s all-overhead systems eliminate the need for large civil footprint and intrusive in-pavement sensors, and usher a new era of tolling with minimal lane closures and field maintenance.”
Indra will also present at a thought-leadership session on breakthroughs in V2X Toll technology. It will share insights on the landmark I-485 Express Lanes project in North Carolina, its at-scale deployment of a C-V2X connected-vehicle tolling system. The company will also spotlight “its multi-year experience in optimizing managed lanes through precise AI-based vehicle occupancy detection (VOD). This multi-angle precision imaging technology uses fully trained AI models to count vehicle occupants, with accuracies that have enabled successful enforcement and revenue recovery in High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes since 2020, minimizing violation rates and optimizing traffic throughput.”
