Canadian Liberal Party Blocked A Proposed Study Of Gordie Howe Bridge Deal
“Opposition members of the House of Commons used a [July 29] meeting of the Standing Committee on Government Operations and Estimates . . . to call for more transparency on the deal to open the Gordie Howe International Bridge,” CBC News reports. “But a Liberal majority voted to adjourn the meeting without voting on a motion calling for a study of the deal.”
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has reportedly acknowledged that some of his comments about the revised agreement were less than clear. But questions persist about how the deal was reached and exactly how it defines “operating costs,” which will be covered before there is a 50-50 split of toll revenue with the US.
The study would have called for testimony by Infrastructure Minister Gregor Robertson, Canada-US Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc, and Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne. It also would have required all drafts of the agreement to be turned over.

The preliminary budget released this week by New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) calls for a 4 percent increase in bridge and tunnel tolls and subway and bus fares beginning in March 2027, CBS News New York reports.
The increase is unrelated to congestion pricing; rather, it is a continuation of the agency’s recent policy of increasing rates about every two years. “Officials say the smaller, planned increases help keep pace with inflation, cover rising operating costs, and avoid larger price hikes down the road.” Another 4 percent across-the-board increase is planned for 2029.
Public hearings (dates undetermined yet) will be scheduled before the MTA board votes to finalize the rate adjustment.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) board seated three new members at its July 29 meeting:
- Melanie Hartzog, recommended by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, is president and CEO of The New York Foundling, a social welfare nonprofit serving people in metro New York and in Puerto Rico. She previously served as New York City Deputy Mayor for Health and Human Services and as director of the Mayor’s Office of Management and Budget.
- Janette Sadik-Khan, who was also recommended by Mayor Mamdani, is a principal at Bloomberg Associates and chair of the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) and the Global Designing Cities Initiative. She served as New York City Transportation Commissioner from 2007 to 2013. According to the MTA news release announcing the board appointments, Ms. Sadik-Khan “led transformative initiatives to improve street safety and expand pedestrian space to modernize the city’s landscape” during her tenure as commissioner.
- Matthew Rand, recommended by Rockland County Executive Ed Day, is president of Howard Hanna Real Estate Services’ New York Region and president of Howard Hanna Rand Realty, a large residential real estate firm. He has been active in several business and economic development organizations and is known as an advocate for “fostering public-private collaboration to address regional challenges.”
MTA also announced that two current board members, Blanca P. López, who represents Westchester County, and James O’Donnell, the Orange County representative, have been reappointed and will serve additional board terms.
The appointments of all five board members have been confirmed by the New York State Senate.
