Kansas Turnpike Installs Truck Parking Information System To Help Drivers
The Kansas Turnpike authority (KTA) has installed technology at all six of its service areas to help truck drivers find parking spaces where they can take breaks.
The new system’s cameras and sensors detect commercial vehicles entering and leaving each service area and uses the observation data to calculate parking space availability in real time. Vacant space information is displayed on a roadside sign to permit drivers to decide whether to stop. As an added safety measure, the system generates an alert when a vehicle is making a wrong-way exit from the service area.
KTA has made several other upgrades over the past decade — lengthening acceleration and deceleration ramps and adding parking spots, for example — for the benefit of commercial truck derivers.
