NYC Health Department Finds Air Quality Improved Slightly Or Remained Stable After Congestion Pricing's Introduction
This afternoon, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) announced the release of a city health department report it called the first comprehensive evaluation of the Manhattan congestion pricing program’s impact on air quality. The results show “that the city’s air quality remained stable or improved slightly in the first year of congestion pricing, continuing a 20-year trend of improving air quality and declining pollution. Additionally, environmental justice communities alongside major highway corridors identified in the Congestion Relief Zone Tolling Environmental Assessment did not experience increased air pollution attributable to congestion pricing.”
According to MTA, “The report also concluded that the reduced congestion, improvements in transit systems, and investments through the mitigation program — which directs funds toward initiatives in environmental justice communities — clearly demonstrate the overall benefit of the program.”

The Indian Express reports, “Almost one in every 10 vehicles crosses [barrier-free toll points] with a faulty or invalid FASTag, according to an analysis of monthly reports from five Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) toll plazas.” The analysis covered toll plazas in Delhi, Gujarat, Haryana, and Rajasthan, where transactions totaled about 1.10 crore (11 million) between May and July. Roughly 10.52 lakh (1.052 million) of those triggered e-notices of toll violations.
Passenger cars, which represent by far the majority of vehicles using the toll systems, accounted for more than 91 percent of the violations. The article also breaks down violations by size of vehicle.
“A senior highway official said the total realisation of the amount against e-notices is around 40%,” the article states. Although the violation rate has been high during the free-flow electronic system’s initial weeks and months, the data indicate that it is beginning to decline.
“The government is pushing for more MLFF toll plazas to reduce travel time, decongest highways (especially near toll plazas), improve fuel efficiency and lower vehicular emission. According to the economic survey 2025-26, the MLFF is projected to be implemented across all four-lane and above national highways and expressways by March 2029.”
The National Highways Authority of India has already has awarded contracts for 12 additional plazas through the Indian Highways Management Company LTD (IHMCL), the government-controlled toll implementation agency. Additional bidding opportunities have been opened for 104 more MLFF installations in several Indian states.

In a July 31 news release, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ) announced the number of travelers who used the agency’s airports, commuter rail system, ports, tunnels, bridges, and terminals in the first six months of 2026.
The agency’s six vehicular crossings carried 58 million eastbound trips during that period, representing a 1.5 percent year-over-year decrease. That said, June 2026 saw the most truck traffic on record, with about 795,000 eastbound trucks crossing the agency’s bridges and tunnels — an increase of 8.5 percent from June 2025.
Overall, however, traffic at the authority’s commercial airports, which include LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International airports, also declined — down two percent from the same period last year, to 67 million passengers.
PATH Commuter Rail, on the other hand, carried a record number of passengers between January and June. “Over the first half of the year, PATH carried 31.4 million passengers, a 7.5 percent jump from the same period of 2025. This was the highest January through June ridership total recorded since 2020.”
The Port of New York and New Jersey also showed growth in marine traffic, up 7.6 percent year over year.

At a recent meeting, the Central Florida Expressway Authority (CFX) board discussed several avenues for continuing to expand and upgrade its wrong-way driving detection system, WESH News reports.
This summer, the agency installed the detection system technology at most of its off-ramps, where cameras identify wrong-way drivers, who are then signaled with flashing lights. An automated system also notifies FDOT and the Florida Highway Patrol. A pilot installation on the SR 417 mainline is planned to test the system’s use on expressway travel lanes.
“Additionally, [CFX is] considering installing raised, illuminated markers to make warnings more visible and are working with GPS app developers to integrate alerts into navigation systems.”
Since its inception 10 years ago, the CFX system has detected more than 2,800 wrong-way drivers, about 89 percent of whom were able to safely redirect their vehicles. This year, one crash has resulted from an estimated 160 wrong-way incidents.
