Connecticut DOT's Wrong-Way Driving Detection Program Receives TSMO Award
Connecticut DOT is the overall winner of the National Operations Center of Excellence (NOCoE) 2026 Transportation Systems Management and Operations Awards for its wrong-way driving detection program. Launched in 2023 following a series of fatal crashes, it is one of the largest undertakings of its type in the US. About 200 deployed systems employ video cameras to detect a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction. When a vehicle is detected, lights affixed to a prominent sign flash a warning to the driver. An alert is simultaneously delivered to the CTDOT operations center and state police. With each additional detection site, the program aims to prevent wrong way entries, improve response times, and gather reliable data to strengthen future interventions.
“Connecticut DOT’s project demonstrates exactly how TSMO strategies are necessary to improve the safety of our roadways,” said NOCoE Director Nicholas Ramfos. “By using existing technology, innovative interagency coordination, straightforward deployment, CTDOT helped to save lives and to enable the transportation operators and responders to do their jobs even better.”
