The Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA) announced that the $230 million Selmon West Extension opened to traffic shortly after noon today.

Tampa Bay Times reports, “the newest route linking Tampa and Brandon with Pinellas County to the west is being hailed as a historic moment. The extension will connect businesses, freight, and people in Pinellas and Hillsborough counties, Vincent Cassidy, chairman of the Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority board, said in an email to the Times. ‘It will help stimulate social and economic prosperity for local businesses and the entire region,’” Cassidy added.

Work Begins On Life Sciences Campus Perched Over Massachusetts Turnpike

The Boston Globe reports, on Friday, Massachusetts DOT and a development partnership reached closing on a $55 million air-rights deal that opened the door to construction of a two-acre deck and 21-floor life sciences lab facility over a section of the Massachusetts Turnpike in downtown Boston. The article looks at both the long-planned Fenway Center project, the knitting together of neighborhoods now separated by highway, and MassDOT’s new-found ability to capitalize on complex air-rights projects.

IQHQ, Inc., co-developer of Fenway Center, issued a news release this morning  to announce the start of construction. It states the $1 billion undertaking will “dramatically improve pedestrian connections” between several neighborhoods and “act as a prominent catalyst for Boston’s rapidly growing life science sector that will serve the needs of future tenants with collaborative workspaces teaming with top talent, and access to world-class entertainment, amenities, residential space and public transportation.”
