Chicago MPO Focuses On Improving Transportation System Equity

Next City reports, “A new report by the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning underscores the disproportionate transportation cost burden borne by low-income drivers and transit users and lays out some broad recommendations to improve equity.” Among other things, CMAP notes that a substantial number of low-income residents are unbanked or underbanked, making it difficult for them to take advantage of I-PASS, transit fare passes and other services that afford user discounts.  “A good number of CMAP’s recommendations focus on reducing car-related fees and fines.” It identifies models of successful domestic and overseas mitigation initiatives, including the Illinois Tollway Authority’s TOLLING 2020 violation reforms.

Metro Portland County Adopts Values Statement On Transportation Funding

The Clackamas County, Oregon, Board of County Commissioners wants to have a voice in discussions about transportation funding, particularly ODOT proposals to toll interstates and highways in metro Portland. Rather than take a definitive position, the board voted this week to adopt a statement of values on funding solutions with the goal of remaining “proactive and nimble as discussions continue.” The statement identifies interests related to project funding, economic and environmental impacts, and community equity.

Dulles Greenway Hosts May 1 Race-Walk Fundraiser

The Dulles Greenway announced it will host its inaugural “Run the Greenway” race on Saturday, May 1. “The family-friendly event will provide a social distant convening opportunity for runners and their families in the Northern Virginia area, while fundraising for over 20 local charities. The race will start and finish at the Dulles Greenway’s Mainline Toll Plaza, and runners can choose from a 5K, 10K, 800-meter Kids Fun Run and a virtual race option.” Fundraising proceeds — including Dulles Greenway donations — will benefit will benefit Loudoun County, Virginia, charities.
