TransCore Selected for VDOT's I-64 Express Lane Project

TransCore announced that VDOT has selected it to design, build and maintain the toll system for a new express lane facility scheduled to open this fall in the I-64 corridor in Hampton Roads. As part of the I-64 contract, TransCore will maintain the new express lane system for up to 16 years.

MCTRA Will Consider Ordering Traffic and Toll Study for "Aggie Expressway" Project Today

Laredo Morning Times reports, “The Montgomery County Toll Road Authority will consider an agreement for a traffic and toll study for the Texas 249 toll road project [today, April 11].” The report adds, “Montgomery County agreed to fund its small stretch [of the so-called “Aggie Highway” project] and planned on paying for it through tolls on that stretch from Spring Creek to FM 149 in Pinehurst. The cost has been estimated at anywhere from $80 million to $100 million for the Montgomery County portion.”

Golden Gate Bridge Manager Steps Down after Nearly 20 Years at the Helm

Marin Independent Journal reports that Kary Witt, PE, a deputy general manager of the Golden Gate bridge district and “[t]he man who oversaw the day-to-day operations of the [bridge]” during a period marked by many changes, including the introduction of all-electronic tolling, is stepping down after almost two decades to take a position in the private sector.

IL Tollway's I-294 Project Grows "Gnarlier"

Daily Herald reports, “Rebuilding and widening the mammoth Central Tri-State Tollway (I-294) is complicated enough given it’s the system’s most-used road, with up to 185,000 cars and trucks clogging it daily. Throw in a tangle of towns where officials either hate or love the project, plus churn on the tollway board, and the planned redo gets even gnarlier.”

Group Moves to Stop New Toll Roads in Indiana

WRTV reports, “A movement to stop new toll roads in Indiana is gaining steam on social media. The group, No Tolls Indiana, has nearly 3,000 likes on Facebook as of [April 10]. An online petition has 3,500 signatures, according to the group.” As the station notes, lawmakers are still negotiating the final terms of a funding bill, HB 1002, with provisions that could lead to more tolling of interstate highways.

San Clemente Mayor Hits TCA over Possible 241 Toll Road Extension

The Orange County Register reports that San Clemente Mayor Kathy Ward, in her state of the city address, took aim at the possibility that a Transportation Corridor Agency transportation study “will result in a proposal to extend the 241 Toll Road directly through San Clemente. ‘This is a very serious issue for our city,’ Ward said. ‘This extension would destroy our city. The answer to a toll road in San Clemente has to be unequivocally no.’”

Bill Allowing NC to Recover Litigation Costs from Unsuccessful Highway Project Challengers Has I-77 Express Opponents Worried

The Charlotte Observer reports, “A North Carolina Senate bill could make it harder to challenge – or block – state road projects, the head of a group fighting the Interstate 77 toll project said Monday [April 10]. Senate Bill 613 would allow the state to collect attorney’s fees and court costs if it wins a legal challenge to any transportation project.”

VA Lawmaker Takes Hard Stance Against I-95 Express Toll Lanes

PotomacLocal.com reports that last week “State Senator Jeremy McPike (D-Manassas, Prince William) took a hard stance against the E-ZPass Express toll lanes on Interstate 95. ‘This is the biggest land giveaway I have ever seen,’ McPike . . . told a crowd of about 70 attendees at a joint town hall with Lt. Governor Ralph Northam, who’s also seeking the Democratic nomination for Virginia Governor. . . . ‘We’re going to have to find a way to uncouple ourselves from this deal,’ [McPike] added.” [Link inserted.]

Former District Attorney Received Payments from Law Firm for Helping Land Lake Pontchartrain Causeway Contracts

WWL reports, “Days after his sentencing for a public corruption conviction, a criminal investigation by the Louisiana Inspector General reveals former St Tammany Parish District Attorney Walter Reed received payments from a Metairie law firm for doing no work, other than helping them land legal contracts with the [Lake Pontchartrain] Causeway Commission.” The station adds, the inspector general concluded that commission officials were unaware of the payment arrangement between Reed and the law firm.

OK Transportation Commission Approves Route for OTA's Gilcrease Expressway Project

Tulsa World reports, “The Oklahoma Transportation Commission on [April 10] approved the route for a toll road to complete the Gilcrease Expressway. Last month, the Oklahoma Turnpike Authority adopted a resolution to further work on the project, which has been on the books for decades. The estimated cost of completing the final leg of the project is $290 million.”

Bridgegate Defendants File Appeal Notices

Associated Press reports, “Two ex-allies of New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie convicted in the George Washington Bridge lane-closing trial last fall have filed formal notice that they will appeal the verdicts. Bridget Kelly and Bill Baroni filed notices Monday [April 10] on taking their cases to the Third Circuit Court of Appeals.” Both remain on bail pending the appeal.

Nova Scotia Report Calls Tolling Expansion a "Divisive" Issue

CBC News reports, “If the province wanted strong public support before going ahead with tolls to help pay for twinning highways, it’s unlikely shovels will enter the ground anytime soon.” The article adds that a Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal Department report on recent public consultations found, “The majority of people responding were not in favour of the tolls, with the report calling it a ‘divisive’ issue.”

$3.3 Billion Sydney Tunnel Project is Early Focus of NSW Inquiry on "How Tolls Are Set"
