North Carolina DOT Introduces New Prepaid Toll Account With Lower Balance Minimum
Motorists who anticipate using only North Carolina toll facilities no longer need a transponder to establish an NC Quick Pass account and save on tolls, NCDOT announced yesterday. A new “NC Only” account option extends the standard 35 percent electronic payment discount to drivers who register their license plates to open a prepaid account. (NC Only can’t be used to pay tolls outside the state.) NCDOT also announced that it is reducing the pre-paid balance minimum from $20 to $10 for all new NC Quick Pass customers. To ensure accounts have adequate funds, the department will start evaluating minimum balance levels monthly instead of quarterly.

The Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission (DRJTBC) yesterday reported the death at age 80 of a long-time commission member from New Jersey, Garrett Leonard Van Vliet. His term extended from 2014 until early this year. Mr. Van Vliet retired from New Jersey DOT following a 38-year career as a road and bridge construction supervisor. DRJTBC chair Aladar Komjathy commented, “Gary was a tireless advocate for sound transportation planning. . . . My colleagues and I learned a lot from Gary. It was an honor and a pleasure to serve beside him on the Commission.” Mr. Van Vliet made valuable contributions to DRJTBC’s Scudder Falls (I-295) Bridge Replacement Project and its management of COVID-19 pandemic challenges.
