According to the news release, “The new I-55 bridge will provide redundancy, improve resiliency, meet modern seismic code, and improve connectivity and economic vitality along this major freight corridor.” A significant repair project is underway on the existing bridge, which is not tolled. Tolling of the replacement span is not contemplated. Environmental studies are currently ongoing and public hearings are scheduled for next month.

WATN notes that Tennessee Governor Bill Lee (R) said the project represents the single-largest transportation investment in his state’s history.

Commercial Truck Fire Threatens To "Cook Off" Handgun Bullets

The Oklahoman reports, an “interstate segment in northeastern Oklahoma” was closed for almost two hours on Friday because of a commercial truck fire. “While the semi was hauling 40,000 pounds of shingles, troopers reported that there was approximately 100 pounds” — that’s pounds, not rounds– “of handgun bullets being kept in the cab.” Fortunately, none of the ammunition discharged during the blaze.

According to an early KTUL report, the incident occurred on the eastbound Will Rogers Turnpike near mile marker 279.
