Transit Advocate Predicts NYC Congestion Pricing Will Have Broad Benefits

In an NPR interview, the policy and communications director of New York’s Riders Alliance, a transit advocacy group, makes the case for MTA’s congestion pricing program. According to Danny Pearlstein, the benefits to transit patrons will come from long-term capital upgrades funded by tolls that improve subway and bus service. However, city residents and visitors in general should see immediate improvements in mobility, emergency response times, delivery of goods and services, and air quality.

TimeOut (New York) reports on five major transit improvements that will be funded with the minimum of one billion dollars annual toll revenue congestion pricing is statutorily required to produce.

Meanwhile, New Jersey officials are continuing to protest the federal environmental approval of MTA’s program. Montclair Local reports, US Representative Mikie Sherrill (D-11) issued a news release calling it “a slap in the face of every New Jersey commuter who powers [New York City’s] economy and every New Jersey resident whose local roads will soon be overwhelmed with rerouted traffic.” Sherrill added that she will encourage New York-based companies to relocate to New Jersey, and she supports Governor Phil Murphy’s threat to sue to halt congestion pricing implementation.

One Blue Water Bridge Span Is Now Closed For Renovation Until Fall

The Detroit News reports, beginning yesterday and continuing through October, the Michigan-bound span of the Blue Water Bridge is closed to traffic while Canada’s Federal Bridge Corporation carries out a rehabilitation project, the structure’s first major renovation since 1999. “All U.S.-bound traffic will instead be directed to the Canada-bound span, which will carry traffic in both directions for the duration of the work. . . .” Although all toll plaza lanes will remain open on both sides of the bridge, cars and commercial trucks headed into the US are experiencing predicted delays (as of yesterday morning, 30 minutes and 75 minutes, respectively). For 2022, the bridge was rated the fourth busiest US-Canada crossing overall, and the second busiest for commercial trucks.
