Six-State Police Initiative Focuses On "Move Over" Law Enforcement
This week, the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP) and other members of the 6-State Trooper Project are focusing on enforcement of “move over” laws, which now exist in some form in all 50 US states. The initiative will continue through Saturday night. OSHP notes that since 2018, its vehicles were struck in 61 crashes related to violation of the state’s move-over law. “During that same time period, the Patrol issued 26,739 Move Over violation citations. These crashes resulted in the deaths of two civilians and 56 injuries to officers and civilians. In 2022, there were only 11 such crashes, 38 percent fewer than in 2021.”

AASHTO Journal reports, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently launched a three-week speeding prevention campaign dubbed “Speeding Wrecks Lives.” The effort, kicked off during a July 10 press event, takes shape through $9.6 million worth of nationwide multimedia, English- and Spanish-language advertising targeting drivers aged 18 to 44, “who data show are most likely to be involved in speeding-related fatal crashes.” According to NHTSA data, speeding accounts for nearly one-third of all US highway fatalities.
NHTSA’s media release on the new campaign includes links to recent studies on the incidence of speeding and speeding related fatalities, and the effectiveness of speed limit enforcement tactics.
