New US Report Offers Framework For Developing National EV Charging Infrastructure

The Joint Office of Energy and Transportation announced that a “new report by the US Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) will serve as a strategic framework for the development of nationwide electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure designed to meet the needs of an anticipated 30–42 million light-duty EVs by 2030.” Titled “The 2030 National Charging Network: Estimating U.S. Light-Duty Demand for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure,” the document analyzes demand with a new level of detail that accounts for factors such as regional variables and a full range of driving behavior, housing types and demographics. The report is intended to inform development of charging infrastructure at every level of government. A key conclusion is that about 1.2 million public ports and 26.8 million private ports will be required by 2030.

The White House issued a fact sheet spotlighting the NREL report and presidential efforts to promote American manufacturing of clean energy products.
