Exoneration? Supreme Court Reverses Two Bridgegate Convictions.
The New York Times reports, yesterday, the US Supreme Court found that Bridget Anne Kelly (former assistant to New Jersey Governor Chris Christie) and Bill Baroni (former PANYNJ deputy chief executive), two of the principal actors in the 2013 Bridgegate scandal, engaged in “deception, corruption, abuse of power;” helped engineer a four-day traffic jam that disrupted (among many other things) ambulance, police and school bus services; and lied in order to create such chaos. And yet, because the purpose of their misconduct was to take political retribution against a mayor who declined to endorse Christie’s reelection and not to obtain money or property for themselves, the Court said they could not be punished under the two fraud statutes prosecutors charged them with. Kelly, Baroni and Christie, safe from the reach of US criminal law, issued statements that characterized the decision as an exoneration.

KAKE reports, health officials have linked “a few cases” of COVID-19 to the food court and restrooms at the Kansas Turnpike Authority’s Topeka Service Area on I-70 at mile marker 188. KTA said the facilities will be closed for deep cleaning, and it is fully cooperating with responsible Shawnee County and state health officials. People who used the facilities after April 23 are urged to seek medical attention if they develop symptoms of COVID-19.
WIBW quotes the county health officer as saying the chances that a visitor became infected while at the food court are probably very low but “not zero.”

Philippine Daily Inquirer reports, “Health workers on the frontline of the battle with COVID-19 have had free passage on North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) and Subic Clark Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx).” Metro Pacific Tollway said it has so far waived 2.95 million Philippine Pesos (US$58,500) worth of tolls for 3,610 essential workers.
