Max Lay gets award

One of Australia's greatest engineers Max Lay just got his country's Centenary Medal "for services to civil engineering." In an age of specialization Lay is amazing for his breadth as well as his depth. He is author of the best general history of roads "Ways of the World" (Rutgers University Press, NJ 1992) and many other publications. He has written pavement textbooks. He has led inquiries, managed projects and organizations large and small. Most recently he was the Independent Assessor or arbitrator between investors and the state in the CityLink project in Melbourne. He works with the engineering firm Sinclair Knight Mertz.
