West Virginia detoll move fizzles

March 17, 2012

A move to detoll the West Virginia Turnpike fizzled in the finance committee of the state legislature. Delegate Marty Gearheart (R-Mercer) told the Bluefield Daily Telegraph his bill to end tolls "died in the finance committee."

Gearheart has no alternative source of finance for the Turnpike which takes traffic high through the Appalachians and is a key interstate route for both north-south (I-77) and east-west traffic (I-64).

The Turnpike is an important trucking route between Virginia and Kentucky and between the Carolinas and the mid-west.

But the anti-toller vowed to try again next year.
