Ohio Turnpike now has 70mph speed limit

April 1, 2011

A 70mph maximum speed limit  went into effect today on the Ohio Turnpike, replacing a 65mph limit. The decision made by the Turnpike Commission last December is aimed at allowing faster travel, attracting traffic off parallel rural surface roads like OH2 and US20, improving safety, and boosting toll revenues.

Most of the Ohio Turnpike is 2x3 lanes with shoulders left and right, and has long sight lines. 241 miles, 388km in length it does trip-based tolls with mainline toll plazas involving a stop at the extreme ends only. All other toll collection is conducted on side toll plazas where traffic slows naturally for the interchange ramps.

COMMENT: this 70mph is an overly conservative measure. 80mph would be perfectly safe on this road.
