Indiana Toll Road Concession Company (ITRCC) has opened the first stretch of widened roadway - 2.8km (1.8 miles) - at the eastern end of a stretch of 16km (10 miles) being widened with a third travel lane plus inside shoulder each direction. It is a widening project between mile markers 10 and 20 measured from west to east - in the barrier section heavily used by commuters in to the Chicago area.

The company is committed to the project under the terms of their 75 year concession/lease agreement with the state. About $250m is expected to be spent on improvements. The work is being done by a joint venture of Spain based Ferrovial and Rieth-Reilly, an Indiana firm.

ITRCC CEO Fernando Redondo is quoted: "We are excited to complete the first phase of this massive project. Improvements such as this continue to solidify our commitment to stress free and dependable travel for our patrons."

The new 3+3 lane roadway has full breakdown shoulder each side each direction.
